Club History

Rotary Club of Jinja was chartered on 16th November 1964 and became the third Rotary club in Uganda after the Rotary clubs of Kampala and Mbale. The charter President was Rotarian Sylvester Wanje. Rotarian Wanji was greatly involved in keeping the Rotary Club of Jinja going during the bad years of the 1970s.

Since 1978, it has grown steadily each year. It is currently active in the fields of literacy, clean water, and health for the benefit of the local community. It has won the District 9200 attendance Trophy many times in the last 20 years, and it has also won several other trophies. The Rotary Club of Jinja has also produced 9 Assistant Governors. It has organized 6 Rotary clubs,2 Rotaract clubs and 15 Interact clubs in Uganda

.

The club has been very active in improving the quality of life in the community. Listed below are some of the community projects carried out;

  1. Provision of the automatic generator to Nyenga hospital.
  2. Provision of apparatus to schools.
  3. Distribution of containers of new and used books to schools.
  4. Provision of desks in schools.
  5. Provision of roofing sheets to schools.
  6. Protection of over 160 spring wells.
  7. Sinking bores for schools.
  8. Constructing and running the homes for blind children “Balitwegomba’’ at Spire Primary School.
  9. Paying school fees for disadvantaged children.
  10. Construction of pit latrines in primary schools.
